Design House Stockholm

Flagship store, 2015

Art direction, interior architecture and design of the Stockholm flagship store for Swedish design publishers Design House Stockholm, located at Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), Stockholm’s premium department store. Designed at the end of 2014 and completed early 2015.

We worked with a natural material palette, resembling the brands’ strive for simplicity and materiality, large wooden pillars, a curved raw metal sheet wall at the back, a concrete finish on the walls, glass mirrors and shelves. In this large natural space we created smaller contrasting rooms made out of a thin white metal frame, for display of furniture and objects.

In collaboration with

Larry Jasse, project management.
KFK Snickeri, fine carpentry.
Lars Gustafson, Lystra, light design.
Grand Relations, PR.

A large informational lightbox was wrapped around one of the pillars in the front of the store.

The core of the Design House Stockholm brand is being a publishing house for ideas within Scandinavian design. This was visualized by using the written word, information and typography throughout the store design.

A curved wall, covered with raw sheet metal, was built in the back of the store. Information and inspirational collages and displays are made by using magnets.

A custom shelving system also made it possible to display furniture on the back wall.

Design House Stockholm works as a publisher for ideas, branding wise it was important to focus on each product’s unique idea rather than the collection as a whole. Based on this a modular system of fixtures, ”White Boxes”, that could be combined to fit a variety of spaces, creating an exhibition like display with extensive room for storage. All with focus on easy maintenance and clear display and communication.

A display unit for lighting fixtures. Electrics and cords are hidden in a box in the middle of the unit. Exchangeable signs behind the product tell the story, adding colour and inspirational photography.

Material and light studies made during the design process of the store. Natural materials and spotted lights, creating a stage like setting for the products.
