Nola

Identity, 2021

Art direction, communication strategy and identity design for Stockholm based design manufacturer Nola. Developed in collaboration with the text and social media office Postnormal Production.

Nola, as we know it today, was founded in 1980 by design entrepreneur Agneta Stake and has been a key player in the Swedish design industry ever since. As a developer of furniture and solutions for public spaces (including planters, bicycle-related products and more) Nola wanted to communicate their core values — sustainability, inclusiveness, quality and good design — in a modern and relevant way to the urban planners of today and tomorrow.

The new typographic identity is based on a combination of the fonts GT Walsheim and Self-Modern Italic. Both expressive and playful modern typefaces that both interacts and stand in contrast to each other.

The new logotype is an adaptation of the old word mark. Using GT Walsheim as a foundation the old logo was tweaked into a more modern and humanistic expression.

GT Walsheim, designed by Swiss foundry Grilli Type, was chosen as Nola’s new main typeface. The typeface is inspired by the lettering of Swiss poster designer legend Otto Baumberger. As Grilli Type puts it — GT Walsheim is a friendly but precise typeface.

The new website was designed with focus on both products and Nola’s desire to have a platform for raising questions and discussions about urban planning, design in the public space, sustainability and social inclusiveness.

Envelopes and business cards are letterpress printed. A traditional method the both opens up possibilities for variation and speaks about the company’s interest in craftsmanship, detail and quality.

A catalogue highlighting a selection of projects and products was produced and distributed to most of Sweden’s architectural practices.
